It’s not every day that the federal government writes your business a multimillion-dollar check. Then again, it’s not every business that’s trying to revitalize domestic semiconductor manufacturing. In September, Polar Semiconductor, which has operated in Bloomington for over 50 years, announced that it signed award documents with the U.S. Department of Commerce for up to $123 million. President Surya Iyer says the company will use the money on a $525 million facility expansion expected to double the company’s current production of semiconductor wafers, which these days are used in everything from aerospace and automobiles to fridges and dryers.
