Omar Ansari

Founder and president

Surly Brewing Co.

In 2005, Ansari assumed the Brooklyn Center facility that housed his parents' abrasives manufacturing business, launched Surly Brewing Co., and opened the tap on a burgeoning craft beer revolution. Surly's in-your-face brews and savvy marketing built the lotal "Surly Nation," which helped push through the 2011 "Surly Bill" in the Minnesota Legislature, allowing brewers to open taprooms. Surly, which brewed about 20,000 barrels in 2012, has a seemingly unslaked thirst for expansion: It procured 8 acres in Minneapolis' Prospect Park neighborhood on which to build a $20 million "destination brewery" with an annual capacity of 100,000 in barrels--and a goal of opening in 2014.
