The region’s premier arts institutions flourished on philanthropy and corporate largesse for generations, but today’s business sector is stingier, while philanthropy is in decline and more focused on social justice. That leaves institutions like the Walker looking to visitors and consumers to fill the gap. Felice Clark cut her teeth at Horst Rechelbacher’s Intelligent Nutrients and moved to the Walker in 2021. Her mandate is to find creative ways to monetize the Walker’s existing programming and curatorial priorities. 2024’s Keith Haring exhibition made the cash registers ring and delighted visitors. “The takeaway was people will come out when they feel engaged,” Clark says. “I will keep looking for synergies.”
