Eighteen years ago, Verna Price and her husband, Brother Shane Price, founded the Power of People Leadership Institute (POPLI) in North Minneapolis to empower youths and adults. POPLI offers three core programs, including The Girls Taking Action, which boasts a 98% high school graduation rate among the 5,500 urban girls it has served, 80% of whom go on to attend college. The institute’s Boys of Hope program has mentored more than 500 boys to stay in school, graduate, and enroll in college. The Re-Planting program provides pre- and post-release services for incarcerated men; among the 6,000 served, the recidivism rate is less than 10%. In October, POPLI hosted its first restoration of civil rights ceremony, an event that celebrated 57 men who were mentored to complete parole and regain their civil rights.
