The daughter of migrant farm workers, Minda Garcia learned the importance of health care by interpreting for her mother, who had limited English proficiency. This inspired Garcia to start a health care career at La Clinica, a federally qualified health center in St. Paul. Now, as vice president of Allina Health’s customer experience center in Coon Rapids, she helps the department serve as a central point of entry for patients. Primary services include 24/7 patient scheduling, critical paging services, digital tool end-user support, and navigation and wayfinding. Shortly after joining Allina, she was asked to participate in the organization’s electronic medical record (EMR) selection committee. The EMR implementation project shone a light on the importance of “system-ness” to support patients on their path to better health.
