An autoimmune disease caused Katie Steller’s hair to fall out when she was a child. The kindness she received from a hair stylist was top of mind in 2013 when Steller opened her Northeast Minneapolis salon, Steller Hair Co. While growing her salon business, Steller also took her red stylist chair on the road, offering haircuts to those who couldn’t afford a salon experience. She created a nonprofit, Steller Kindness Project, to share stories of kindness and inspire others to act. She added the Red Chair Project to further the work of giving haircuts to people in need beyond Minnesota. A voice for the industry about the hardships during the early phase of the pandemic, her salon was recently awarded Inspiring Salon of the Year at the national conference of the Professional Beauty Association.
