In his role at Fairview Health Services, Francisco Ramirez strives to address the social determinants of health. Working from St. Paul, he shares culturally tailored health education on topics such as chronic disease prevention, colon cancer prevention, mental health, heart health, and the importance of vaccinations. In 2014, Ramirez spearheaded the Colorectal Cancer Prevention program at Fairview. Colorectal cancer is the second-most diagnosed cancer among the Latine population; the program provides free colonoscopies and health education for adults in underserved communities. To date, more than 345 free procedures have been performed and more than 50,000 people have received preventative health and community resources. Ramirez received medical training at the University of Guadalajara in Mexico, where he worked as a doctor before immigrating to the U.S. in 2004.Â
