One week before the Covid-19 shutdown, Dr. Sarah Manney assumed the role of chief medical information officer at Essentia Health, a Duluth-based integrated health system serving patients in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North Dakota. Her “all-hands-on-deck” attitude allowed for a seamless transition from in-person to virtual visits. Under Manney’s leadership, Essentia Health quickly adapted and conducted more than 500,000 virtual visits during the pandemic, and it continues to offer video visits as a permanent care path, expanding this service to include teleconsultations. She also quickly identified the need for a formal clinical informatics program to aid in technology advancements at Essentia Health and championed the rollout of a technology platform for physician-to-physician communication. Peers say Manney’s clear and thoughtful communication style is key to her success in implementing many Essentia Health advancements.
