AsaleSol Young

Executive director, Urban Homeworks

Description

As executive director of Urban Homeworks, a community development-focused nonprofit in Minneapolis, AsaleSol Young has become a powerful voice in the pursuit of housing justice. Their advocacy during the spring legislative session shaped crucial housing bills; as a result, UHW secured a $5 million direct appropriation dedicated to building affordable homeownership options in the coming years. In 2022, Young initiated the Southside Peacekeeping Coalition to address safety concerns in the Phillips neighborhood, a model that could be repeated in other neighborhoods. Laser-focused on building equitable ownership opportunities for BIPOC families in the Twin Cities, Young led UHW in developing a cooperative homeownership model to provide $20,000 down payment support to Black and Indigenous first-time buyers.
