As a civil rights attorney, Artika Tyner saw that many of her clients learned to read in prison. So in 2017, she launched the social enterprise Planting People Growing Justice Press and Bookstore (PPGJ) and its affiliated nonprofit in St. Paul to address the reading crisis and end mass incarceration. In the last year, she has built strategic partnerships with U.S. Bank and 3M to further these efforts to expand the scope of her author read-alouds and diverse book donations in community spaces. Tyner also published a youth anthology that uplifts Minnesota’s Black youth by promoting leadership and community building across cultures. She has initiated a 100 Black Author campaign that aims to publish 100 Black authors by 2033. Already, the St. Paul organization has published 31 Black authors of all ages.
