Formed as a boutique video production company to create platforms for founder chef/TV personality Andrew Zimmern, Intuitive has evolved into a producer of diverse programming that ventures well beyond the food space and A.Z. President Patrick Weiland came out of network news, and Zimmern gave him carte blanche to build the business, which now creates in the food and home spaces, as well as unscripted formats and documentaries for public affairs outlets like MSNBC and PBS. Weiland notes that funding for the unscripted programming world has dried up as so-called “fast TV”—proprietary streaming channels owned by TV manufacturers like Samsung—booms. “Anthony Bourdain would not get a show today,” he says. “HGTV just cancelled 12 series, Food Network is not commissioning shows.” Intuitive soldiers on, with nine staff and 40 freelancers, making Zimmern’s Wild Game Kitchen, The Dan Buettner Podcast, and an upcoming doc for PBS (details TBA), and “pitching to streamers.”
