As head of one of the nation’s largest nonprofit systems of comprehensive addiction treatment, mental health care, and recovery resources, Joseph Lee has redefined the landscape of substance use treatment and an approach to care and advocacy for all people affected. In 2023, Hazelden Betty Ford provided $6.4 million in financial assistance to patients, representing a $1 million increase from 2022, and celebrated a 76% increase in family members receiving support services. As Center City-based Hazelden Betty Ford marked its 75th anniversary in 2024, Lee activated several DEI initiatives, an operating model transformation, and a transition to a new integrated electronic medical record (EMR). Triple board-certified in child and adult psychiatry and addiction medicine, Lee has devoted his career to the nation’s most pressing health crises, advising in high-profile forums including the surgeon general, the White House, and Congress.
