Description

Marika Reese, a self-described “serial social entrepreneur,” launched Ubuntu Care Services in 2017 to provide outpatient mental health programs for African American clients. The name of the organization is a Zulu word that means “I am what I am because of who we all are.” It’s rooted in a firm belief that all humanity is connected by a universal bond. After the murder of George Floyd and subsequent civil unrest in 2020, Reese was prompted to launch a separate nonprofit arm known as Ubuntu Cares. The organization’s Community Healing Team has been on the ground providing mental health support at community gatherings and protests. The team is composed of up to 30 individuals from all walks of life—social workers, therapists, and “nontraditional healers” like barbers and teachers.
