St. Kate’s Appoints Marcheta Evans as President
St. Catherine University has named its first African-American president.
On Monday, the school’s board of trustees announced that Marcheta Evans has been appointed as president, effective July 15. She’ll replace current president Becky Roloff, who has announced plans to retire by August.
Evans currently serves as chancellor of New Jersey’s Bloomfield College of Montclair State University, a role she’s held since July 2023. Prior to that, she served as president of Bloomfield College, a private college that went on to merge with Montclair State, a public university. Evans was also the first African-American and the first woman to serve as president of Bloomfield.
St. Kate’s board members said they were drawn to Evans’ experience “advancing diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging for students, faculty, and staff.”
“Her embrace of the Catholic intellectual tradition, emphasizing scholarly inquiry and social justice teaching, was a noted strength and led to the Trustees’ unanimous vote on her selection,” said Jean Wincek, chair of St. Kate’s board.
Evans, who will become the 12th president of St. Kate’s, holds a Ph.D. in counselor education and supervision from the University of Alabama. All of St. Kate’s presidents to date have been women.
Each year, St. Kate’s partners with TCB to publish the Minnesota Census of Women in Corporate Leadership.
