Toy Company Behind Labubus Coming to Mall of America
Pop Mart is opening its first Minnesota store, with Mall of America yesterday announcing the Chinese company will bring its uber-trendy designer toys to Bloomington in the fall.
You may know of Pop Mart through association: It makes and sells Labubus.
And you probably know Labubus. These rabbit-eared, sinister-cute monster dolls are responsible for a worldwide buying frenzy. Think back to Beanie Babies. These collectible plush toys and bag charms have sold out within minutes and hit the resale market at double or triple their starting price, per an NPR story on the Labubu phenomenon. (They’re inspiring big-time theft, too.)
At Mall of America, Pop Mart will open in the 119 North Garden unit on Level 1. And it will offer more than Labubus. The store’s IP library packs in other cultishly loved, FOMO-inspiring “collector favorites,” per a Mall of America news release—see: Crybaby, SKULLPANDA, Peach Riot. (The Labubu character is part of a series called “The Monsters.”)
“[Pop Mart’s] innovative retail concept and globally loved characters bring a bold, creative energy to our tenant mix,” leasing director Ashley Hofmann says in the release, going on to note Pop Mart is “redefining how people shop and engage with products.”
Founded in 2010, with more than 350 locations worldwide, Pop Mart has contributed to an apparent revival of collectibles culture. (See also: the Pokémon cards resurgence.) The store’s appeal arguably blends Y2K nostalgia with the allure of scarcity—in line with other Mall of America outlets like BoxLunch (opened in 2016), Squishable (opened in 2023), and the soon-to-open MINISO, all selling collectible toys.
Pop Mart fuels social media hype through blind boxes, too, a concept seen at retailers like BoxLunch and Five Below: Shoppers don’t know which toy is inside, and that’s part of the excitement.
The Labubu craze manifests in the figurines’ “aftermarket” popularity, too, Mall of America notes. They have spawned a black market of fakes, known as “Lafufus.” (Pop Mart has even sued 7-Eleven for allegedly distributing such knockoffs.)
The Mall of America store will be Minnesota’s first Pop Mart, but the Beijing retailer already has two vending machines at Rosedale Center.
The mall store will feature “exclusive product offerings, rotating collaborations, and a thoughtfully curated retail environment that highlights creativity and collectability,” selling bag charms, blind boxes, and more.
“At Mall of America, we’re focused on curating a dynamic mix of tenants that excite and inspire our guests,” Hofmann says. “Pop Mart is a perfect fit.”
