Powerful Partnerships in Mental Health Care

Emergency departments are overwhelmed with clients who need mental health care. Families bring their children to emergency departments for behavioral and mental health concerns because they have nowhere else to turn. Some children even end up boarding at the hospital for months as they wait for appropriate care.

Addressing this dire circumstance requires powerful partnerships—where each party brings its expertise to the table, centers client needs when finding solutions, and does not let money dictate access to proper care. In partnership with the state of Minnesota, local hospitals, and other health care providers, Nexus Family Healing recently launched the Youth Care Transition program, which serves the Twin Cities metro and southern Minnesota. A team of transition experts helps find suitable services for youth in the home, in shelters, and at crisis, respite, or group homes.

The program has reduced the amount of time families in need spend at hospitals waiting for care. The future of mental health care is dependent on many stakeholders coming together, in partnership, to create effective solutions for communities and clients. Powerful partnerships can meet the complex needs of children and families experiencing mental health crises.

Don’t Let Fear Hold You Back in Your Career

After many years spent supervising clinical trainees, I have discovered many top fears on the minds of new counselors entering the mental health field. I believe it’s important for new providers to understand that these fears are common. The good news is they can be addressed and worked through with conversation and research. Each one has its own set of challenges and solutions, addressed in a webinar at rockbridgecounseling.org/whyrockbridge.

The most prevalent worries for new therapists range from knowing when to speak or listen during a therapy session, to worries about improper diagnoses, to navigating feelings of imposter syndrome and managing their own mental health. While these fears are all valid, and even welcomed, it’s more important than ever to have fresh minds in the mental health field who are primed to take on the ever-growing need for therapy in Minnesota. The benefits of being a mental health clinician far outweigh any of these surmountable fears.
