Louis Vuitton and Tiffany & Co. Are Moving to Southdale

The designer brands are the latest to leave Galleria for prime spots in Southdale's new luxury wing.

Louis Vuitton and Tiffany & Co.—two luxury retailers that have long distinguished Edina’s Galleria as the preeminent destination for exclusive shopping in the Twin Cities—are following many of the center’s top nationals across the street to Southdale. Signage for both brands went up Friday on the exterior of Southdale’s under-construction luxury wing—facing Galleria, which brought them to town.

With the announcement of the two, Southdale’s luxury wing on the south side of the mall near Kowalski’s is fully leased. The wing, with high ceilings and plenty of natural light, opens June 12—but with most stores still under construction. David Yurman will be the first to debut, followed by Burberry, Max Mara, Moncler, Watches of Switzerland, and Gucci with staggered opening dates before the end of the year. It’s all part of a $400 million makeover of Southdale by Simon Property Group.

Several former Galleria tenants are already open in Southdale’s center court, including Vineyard Vines, Kate Spade New York, and lululemon.

Earlier this week, Galleria announced Boll & Branch, a new-to-market bedding brand. And Arhaus is doubling the size of its Galleria presence. But that leaves several vacancies at the Galleria, which has long enjoyed nearly 100% occupancy and a waiting list of retailers vying for space. Management for the Hines-run property seem nonplussed by the losses to Southdale.

“As a unique specialty retail center, we are selective, and we choose carefully to make sure we offer a seamless blend of dining experiences, home, men’s and women’s fashion and more,” Galleria leasing director Jennifer Smith said Friday. “We’re staying true to the Galleria that people know and love, and we’re currently in negotiations with brands that are the right fit—like the recently announced Boll & Branch and our newest local brand, Laserie.”

Tiffany & Co. opened at Galleria in 2004. Over the past two years, the iconic jeweler has redesigned some of its stores—most notably its Fifth Avenue flagship in New York City—with less emphasis on its signature Tiffany blue in favor of wood parquet flooring, white marble, and more artistic flourishes. Louis Vuitton—one of the few logo-focused designer brands that has long been popular with modest Minnesotans—opened at Galleria in 2010, across the corridor from Tiffany’s.
