Mall of America to Open ‘Psychedelic Art’ Attraction

The Bloomington mall plans to bring Las Vegas's Wink World to shoppers this summer. It's part of an ongoing push toward experiential retail.

Mall of America this summer plans to open a Las Vegas attraction led by a founding member of the Blue Man Group. Known as “Wink World,” the immersive art exhibit first opened in Las Vegas’s Area15 event venue in 2021.

The Las Vegas exhibit has drawn over 100,000 attendees each year since it opened, said Chris Wink, CEO of Wink World and co-founder of Blue Man Group.

“I have always liked the idea of creating a carnival-type experience but in an updated way,” Wink told TCB in an email. “Something that’s super fun and that appeals to a broad range of tastes, but that uses the latest technology and everything I’ve learned from theater and Blue Man Group so that it feels completely new and exciting.”

On Wink World’s website, the attraction is billed as “psychedelic art house meets carnival funhouse.” MOA’s Wink World will feature seven unique rooms that each showcase a different combination of light, color, sound, technology, and motion. Each room has a distinct tone and mood to them with elements such as bouncing slinkies, spinning neon ribbons, infinity mirrors, and lasers.

MOA’s Wink World, which will sit on level three on the north side of the Bloomington mall, won’t completely mimic the Las Vegas iteration, though. According to Wink, the MOA version will feature an additional exhibit room and a new lobby installation.

“We are so excited about joining the legendary Mall of America family,” he said. “They were the first to get it right, by creating super fun reasons for people to visit besides just shopping opportunities.”

Indeed, Mall of America was among the first few shopping centers to feature entertainment attractions. But these days, you’d be hard pressed to find a surviving mall that hasn’t dipped into experiential attractions like Escape Rooms, self-serve bars, and even yoga studios.

Aside from the long-running Nickelodeon Universe theme park, MOA continues to test out other entertainment outfits. That includes the soon-to-open Museum of Illusions, which will also feature immersive exhibits.

“We love bringing new and creative concepts to Mall of America, so we couldn’t be more excited to welcome the experiential vision Chris Wink has created,” said Carrie Charleston, vice president of leasing at MOA in a news release.

Beyond the exhibits in Bloomington and Las Vegas, Wink doesn’t plan to move too quickly to open others. “We have figured out a number of ways to improve upon our first Wink World, and so we are excited to show the world an even more dazzling iteration of our multimedia funhouse experience,” he said.
