A Royal Ceiling

Award: 2010 NARI Contractor of the Year Award
Category: Residential Addition—$200,000 and Under
Honoree: Corrigan Custom Homes, Inc., Eden Prairie

The owners of this Eden Prairie home wanted their bedroom to be an intimate sanctuary, where they could retreat and relax. Corrigan Custom Homes created a rich, alder wood–paneled ceiling as part of the bedroom’s European castle feel. A unique hand-painted coat-of-arms shield is nestled in each of the ceiling panels, with the homeowners’ initials incorporated into the design. A key challenge was to give the wood the right amount of aging wash in order to achieve the castle look. Additional lighting and a new chandelier were added to highlight the ceiling artwork.

Corrigan kept the bedroom design consistent with the rich colors and textures used elsewhere in the home. A bay wall in the bedroom was bumped out by two feet to make room for a fireplace—one that resembles a European turn-of-the-century coal-burning stove.
