Is the enormous risk of opening a restaurant preventing you from opening the eatery you’ve always dreamed of? A new food-focused incubator is coming to the North Loop neighborhood this summer and may be just the launchpad aspiring restaurateurs are looking for.
United Properties announced Thursday that Galley Group, a food hall-style incubator out of Pittsburgh, will be cooking up a similar styled location within The Nordic, a 10-story, 200,000-square-foot mixed-use development along Washington Avenue in Minneapolis.
Galley Group’s offering will occupy roughly 8,750 square feet of space on the building’s first floor. The company in its announcement Thursday said it intends to give “select local chefs an opportunity to launch a new restaurant concept in a low-risk, low-cost environment.”
Interested chefs are encouraged to apply for a kitchen space right now.
"We're excited to be coming to Minneapolis, particularly the North Loop neighborhood," says Galley Group co-founder Tyler Benson. "We are looking forward to creating a lively space for the community where there will always be new offerings and experiences to be had."
Designed by Studio BV, the food hall-styled accelerator space will include four fully built-out kitchens, communal seating, and unique beverage offerings at a 22-seat bar. In addition to providing the space, Galley Group will provide front of house staff, marketing and public relations, overhead equipment, and business strategy support.
Galley Group joins a roster of tenants at The Nordic that so-far include co-working company WeWork—which last week announced plans to occupy 60,000 square feet of space between floors five through seven of the building—and digital marketing and analytics firm Ovative Group, which signed a lease in 2016.
“The Nordic is the perfect home for Galley Group to bring their acclaimed food hall concept to Minneapolis," says Gordy Stofer, vice president of office development for Minneapolis-based United Properties. "There is built-in demand within this mixed-use development, including residential and office components, and, along with the outdoor plaza, the food hall will solidify The Nordic as a signature destination in the North Loop."
Project partners for The Nordic include RJM Construction, office designer Hartman Cox, and residential marketing agent Greco. Renovation work on the building is expected to be completed by July.
