Sam’s Club to Open Distribution Center in Shakopee

The announcement comes months after Amazon closed its own Shakopee facility earlier this year.

Sam’s Club, Walmart’s wholesale club operation, is opening a new distribution center in Minnesota in early 2024.

On Thursday, the Bentonville, Arkansas-based retailer announced plans to open a new multipurpose distribution center in the Shakopee area to help supply around a dozen clubs in Minnesota. The 365,000 square-foot center in Shakopee will open in March at 7400 Hentges Way, and will hire more than 80 new employees.

The new facility is a part of a “multi-year growth plan” that Walmart announced in January aimed at improving the Sam’s Club supply chain and expanding its physical footprint after seeing “record growth” over the last two years.

“We’re designing our supply chain network to strengthen our omni-channel experience and increase efficiencies and delivery speed to wherever our members decide to shop with us and receive their products,” said senior vice president of supply chain Joseph Godsey in a press release issued Thursday.

Similar to other warehouse clubs like Costco, Sam’s Club is a membership-based store that offers deals on products, fuel, prescriptions, and other goods. The company has nearly 600 locations across the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Three additional warehouses are set to open across the country near St. Louis, Oklahoma City, and Atlanta.

The Shakopee facility is slated to open just about a year after Walmart’s biggest competitor Amazon closed its own Shakopee warehouse. The Amazon site had employed over 680 workers, who were given the option to transfer to Amazon’s other Twin Cities warehouses. Amazon’s first Minnesota facility didn’t appear until 2016, while Sam’s Club owner Walmart opened its first location in Minnesota thirty years earlier in 1986.
