Helping kids with cancer and their families with financial and emotional support.
In December of 2002, nine-year-old Mitch Chepokas, terminally ill with bone cancer, withdrew the entire $6,000 from his savings account and put it in envelopes for kids on the pediatric oncology floor at the hospital. After giving all his money away, Mitch’s dad made a pinky swear promise with him to always help children with cancer and their families after he was gone. Mitch passed away on April 11, 2003, and shortly afterward, Pinky Swear Foundation was established by his parents to honor the promise he made.
When a child is battling cancer, the whole family is faced not only with a heavy emotional and psychological toll, but also a financial one. Even families with good insurance can find themselves on the brink of financial disaster. Major upheavals to family routines, expenditures, work, and plans occur rapidly, especially if the child’s treatment has to take place far from home.
Pinky Swear provides families facing cancer with financial and emotional support, including:
• Rent and mortgage payments, home repairs
• Food on the table for kids and families
• Auto expenses, repairs and gas cards
• Utilities, child care, and other family needs
• All-Star Weekends and other events that provide quality time together
Each year, approximately 15,000 children are newly diagnosed with cancer in the U.S. Visit donate.pinkyswear.org to make a tax-deductible gift, and help take some of the weight off the shoulders of the parents focused on the treatment of their child.
Ongoing volunteer opportunities are available in our Pinky Swear Pantry, delivering toys for All-Star Weekend getaways, and at multiple fundraising events year-round.
