Launched five years ago, nonprofit media outlet Sahan Journal is a relatively good news story amid a bleak period for media at large. The digital publication, which caters to immigrants and people of color in Minnesota, has increased staff and readership since it premiered, and new executive director Vanan Murugesan thinks there’s room to continue growing. Though not a journalist himself, Murugesan brings an understanding of nonprofit media from his prior job at Pillsbury United Communities, which operates a newspaper and a radio station. “We believe robust community engagement is a way to maximize content impact,” Murugesan says, “while meeting the needs of our community.”
