Every day for 12 years, artist Mary Jo Hoffman photographed nature (milkweed pods, blue jay feathers, fern fronds she gathered around her Shoreview home) and posted the photos on her blog, STILL (stillblog.net). She describes the daily practice as mundane yet magnificent. In 2024, her work debuted in a $60 coffee table book, STILL: The Art of Noticing. But her last blog post—sumac leaves tinged in gold and scarlet red, as if aflame—was Oct. 4. Returning from a book signing, she learned her house had been destroyed in a fire. “The chain has been broken,” Hoffman says of the 4,660 consecutive days of posts. “As gutted and dazed as I am, I am still noticing little moments of beauty every day.” Hoffman says she hopes to resume the blog in January, albeit through a different lens.
