Years of experience as an artist and museum curator led Jovan C. Speller Rebollar to thinking across sectors on how to involve artists in government, business, and nonprofits. It all came together for her when she became executive director of the organization that produces the 10-day winter festival of the same name. Her vision: to make it the premier festival of the season, first regionally and then across the U.S. Besides making the event more accessible to out-of-state visitors, she also hopes to break stereotypes. Often, “not walking out the door when it’s cold is a self-imposed barrier,” she says. She wants to give people of color or those who come from cultures that don’t have winter traditions an opportunity to embrace the season.
