In 2017, Andrea Jenkins drew national attention as the first African American openly trans woman elected to office in the United States. A writer and artist representing Ward 8 in south-central Minneapolis, Jenkins carries the added responsibility of leading a City Council with a history of intransigent factionalism. A priority is to adopt a rent stabilization policy to help vulnerable residents. She also says she’ll work to advance “a public safety continuum that prioritizes alternatives to traditional policing and invests in training, housing, and other initiatives” to aid people impacted by pandemic effects and traumatized by the murder of George Floyd and the ensuing social unrest.
