At the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority (MPHA), Abdi Warsame has been the driving force behind the agency’s advocacy and reputation work. Recently, Warsame secured the funding to install fire suppression systems in all 42 agency high-rises, including $4.9 million of capital support in the city of Minneapolis 2023 budget and a first-of-its-kind $5 million appropriation from the Minnesota State Legislature. He led efforts to resuscitate a long-dormant annual housing tax levy in Minneapolis at $5 million a year, the largest in the city’s history. In 2023, Warsame also helped MPHA secure an additional $11 million in both one-time and ongoing funding support for the agency’s preservation and production work, supplementing the $20 million received from the Minnesota Department of Housing and Urban Development for capital improvement work.
