Starkey Labs Becomes Starkey Hearing Technologies
Starkey Laboratories, Inc., has changed its name.
The 45-year-old company is now Starkey Hearing Technologies-a change that it says incorporates its broad focus on technology, its global expansion, and a changing marketplace that values cutting-edge technology and personalized service. Starkey also sought to emphasize its sole focus on hearing care and help consumers more quickly identify it as a hearing care company.
Starkey, based in Eden Prairie, has operations in 21 countries and conducts business in more than 100 countries worldwide. It develops, manufactures, and distributes hearing aids via five brands-Audibel, AudioSync, NuEar, MicroTech, and its namesake brand, Starkey.
“Over the past decade, we have gone from a manufacturing company to a global technology company with several businesses residing inside our walls,” Jerry Ruzicka, president of Starkey Hearing Technologies, said in a statement. “The name change better aligns with both who we are as an organization, as well as our focus on innovation, technology, and the diverse customers we serve.”
According to Starkey, more than 36 million U.S. citizens have experienced hearing loss, and that number will continue to grow as Baby Boomers reach 65-the age when people become likely candidates for hearing aids.
Starkey said that going forward, it plans to increase its efforts toward educating consumers about hearing care and recent breakthroughs in technology, such as advanced noise reduction and speech preservation, wireless media connectivity, and invisible hearing aid options.
Starkey Hearing Technologies is a privately held company with 3,500 employees. Its philanthropic arm, the Starkey Hearing Foundation, fit more than 500,000 hearing aids for people in need between 2000 and 2010; it is now committed to fitting more than 100,000 hearing aids annually and 1 million in this decade.
