Minnesota Agencies Prep for Vets Career Fair
Two Minnesota agencies next week will hold a career fair dedicated to veterans.
On Nov. 19, the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development and the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs will hold their 14th annual veterans career fair. The event routinely draws participation from several of the state’s Fortune 500 companies, including 3M, Cargill, and Ameriprise Financial.
Due to coronavirus, the event will be held virtually for the first time.
This year, state officials expect around 200 employers to participate. For 3M, the event is part of the company’s larger veteran recruitment strategy, said Jennifer Loveland, lean six sigma black belt at 3M. The company is a gold-level sponsor of this year’s career fair.
“As a fellow veteran and 3M hiring manager, it is wonderful to be part of a local event that encourages companies to highlight opportunities for other veterans,” she said in an email. “At the same time, it creates a central place for veterans to go to connect with local companies who understand their experiences and can help make connections to build on those military experiences and pursue roles outside of the military.”
It’s a similar story for Bayport-based window and door maker Andersen Corp., which is another gold-level sponsor.
“We believe that when we hire veterans, we gain talented leaders who bring their service, their sacrifice and their teamwork to benefit Andersen,” said Tracey Gibson, the company’s senior director of talent acquisition and inclusion. “Having a presence at military and veteran career events is important to building a solid pipeline of talented individuals who bring diverse experiences to Andersen.
Though the window for other exhibitors has closed, registration is still open for job seekers.
According to federal data, the unemployment rate for veterans sat at about 5.9 percent last month. That was slightly below the rate for non-veterans, which was 6.8 percent in October, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
