To encourage students to take an interest in engineering, educators formed the Mahtomedi Engineering Leadership Program to provide engineering curricula and community engagement. Scot Hovan, engineering coordinator for the Mahtomedi school district, was instrumental in creating the program.
Through Hovan’s relationship with the University of Minnesota’s STEM Education Center, he has helped incorporate the use of model-making activities in non-engineering classes. He’s also led evening events—regularly attracting more than 500 people—to promote awareness around engineering. The program also includes engineering camps for kids and extracurricular engineering activities. And Mahtomedi middle school students are now required to take engineering courses.
