It helps to be an extrovert when you’re managing a hotel. Or a wide receiver. Westin Edina Galleria general manager Matt Truskolaski is almost always on the go, and when he’s at his desk, it’s often to grab the football he tosses to his team during management meetings. Look alive!
A Super Bowl football. I am a diehard Vikings fan and Cris Carter is one of my all-time favorite players. Cris gave a speech here at Westin Edina Galleria during a Super Bowl Event and signed it for me.
Wine Spectator magazine. I have a passion for good food and wine and I’m always looking for the next best thing for Prelude, the bar and lounge here at the Westin, and the food and beverage department at the hotel.
Black pens. I only use TUL Retractable Gel Pens, Needle Point, 0.5 mm, black barrel, black ink.
Opening day photo. The Westin Edina Galleria is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year. This photo highlights the original team that opened the hotel.
Wall photo. That picture on the wall is of my triplet brother, Andy, and one of my dearest friend’s, Tyler, who both passed away tragically at the age of 40. It reminds me to never regret a day in my life, appreciate the good people that I have around me, and always be sure to let them know that.
What about those two decanters on your desk—they seem to have been drained? Actually, they were samples we ultimately decided not to use. The ones we chose are full!
How often do you toss around that football? A lot, it keeps me calm throughout the day. Actually, every Friday morning we have the positivity circle during our morning manager stand-up, and I will start by throwing the football to a manger. The person with the ball has to tell the person next to him or her what they are thankful for about their fellow manager. It’s a great way to start the day.
View from your desk? My office is located behind the front desk with a view of the Galleria and Starbucks. I am in the middle of the sales and accounting department where I love to interact with my team.
How much of your work happens at your desk? I am always on the move it seems. I love walking through the hotel seeing our guests and checking in on our entire team, but sometimes I have to actually sit in one spot to work on reports. I would estimate 20 percent of my time is spent at my desk.
Can you work at a messy desk? I probably could work at a messy desk, but thankfully now that most of my work is electronic, I don’t have to worry about clutter. It leaves more space on the desk for my Vikings gear!
