Cargill Buying Ohio-based Pet Food Conglomerate Pro-Pet

The purchase, once finalized, will make Cargill the only supplier of both animal feed and pet food in the nation’s agricultural retail market.

Cargill kicked off the new year with an acquisition for Pro-Pet, a private label pet food maker out of Ohio.
 
With the purchase—expected to close in the next month—Wayzata-based Cargill will become the only supplier of both animal feed and pet food in the U.S. agricultural retail space, the company said in a release Tuesday.
 
Pilar Cruz, president of Cargill’s feed and nutrition business noted in a statement that the deal would allow buyers needing both horse feed and dog chow the option of a one-stop shop.
 
Pro-Pet has a number of pet food brands under its name, among them: premium dog food label Black Gold. It also produces treats and dry and wet food for dogs and cats, as well as food for rabbits, guinea pigs and other smaller animals.
 
“There is no other organization that can leverage the strengths and capabilities of Pro-Pet better than Cargill, which will enhance our ability to serve retail partners and pet food brand owners,” said Pro-Pet’s CEO Jim Wiegmann in prepared remarks.
 
Between its three pet food manufacturing facilities—in Owatonna; St. Marys, Ohio; and Kansas City, Kansas—Pro-Pet employs more than 150 people.
 
Aside from expanding its portfolio, Cargill said the deal would grow its production capacity and help it further capitalize on pet food market trends.
 
“Pet food is a top-growing category among agriculture retailers with an estimated eight percent distribution share,” Cargill said, “in a space that continues to evolve with changing consumer preferences.”
 
As of today, Cargill operates 50 animal feed and production and distribution facilities across the U.S., which offer both branded and private label pet food.
 
Terms of the deal between Cargill and Pro-Pet were not disclosed.
