OneOme Lands on "World's Most Innovative Companies" List

Fast Company highlighted the Minneapolis medical startup on its Top 50 list.

Who are the most innovative companies in the world? The 2018 list from Fast Company magazine includes many big names like Apple, Netflix, Amazon, Spotify and SpaceX. But Minneapolis-based health care startup OneOme LLC is also there, ranking 22nd among the 50 companies on the annual “World’s Most Innovative Companies” list.

The company was founded in 2013 by Minneapolis-based Invenshure, an incubator and venture investor, and the Rochester-based Mayo Clinic. OneOme’s RightMed software can be used with a DNA analysis to create a report to avoid or minimize adverse drug reactions in patients.

“OneOme more than deserves to be on this list,” said Shaye Mandle, president and CEO of Medical Alley Association, a Golden Valley-based trade group for Minnesota medical companies. “The product just has so many possible implications to improve outcomes and lower costs — the stuff that everybody talks about, but is elusive. It is recognition of where innovation is happening today in health care.”

On the Fast Company list OneOme outranked companies such as Slack, the cloud-based communications platform, and Pinterest, a popular web site for sharing images and photos. OneOme was the only Minnesota company to make the Fast Company lineup. OneOme also ranked second on Fast Company’s biotech sector survey, behind Switzerland-based Novartis, an industry giant.

While tech companies from Silicon Valley and New York typically draw lots of attention, it’s less common to see Midwestern companies on national lists of innovative, creative businesses. Mandle believes that OneOme’s appearance on the Fast Company list will help to raise the national profile of Minnesota’s deep pool of medical and health care startups.

“I just think it’s phenomenal for the community,” said Mandle. “More people will be looking at where OneOme comes from.”

OneOme secured $5.25 million in financing in the fall of 2016 as it was ramping up the launch of RightMed.

In September 2017, OneOme announced that the RightMed test would be offered in three Asian markets: Japan, Hong Kong and Macau.

In 2017, Twin Cities Business included OneOme on its “20 Companies to Watch” list.
