Schwan’s Invests $5M in Subscription-based Baby Food Service

Raised Real, currently offered in five West Coast states, plans to use the new capital to expand its service nationwide.

A subscription-based meal delivery service designed specifically for growing babies announced Tuesday a $5 million investment from one of Minnesota’s largest food makers, the Schwan’s Company.
 
San Francisco-based Raised Real said it would dedicate the new capital to a nationwide launch of its service, set to take place at the end of the year. Currently, Raised Real ships its ready-to-go meals to residents of California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona and Nevada.
 
The startup, founded last year, targets its meals at health-conscious parents with a child between six months to two years of age. With Raised Real’s subscription plan, customers receive a 20-meal box at a cost of $95 every two weeks. Each meal, said to be frozen within two hours of harvest at a farm, includes “fruits, vegetables and micronutrients” curated specifically to the nutritional needs of a baby’s early development stage, according to Raised Real.
 
Schwan’s chief executive Dimitrios Smyrnios applauded what he called “a unique approach” that Raised Real applied to the baby food category.
 
“We believe in their vision of delivering the best in homemade baby food, as we were the pioneers of direct-to-consumer food delivery when Schwan’s got its start in 1952,” he said.
 
Today, Marshall-based Schwan’s is one of the largest private companies in Minnesota. Boasting popular pizza brands like Red Baron and Tony’s, along with its Pagoda Asian cuisine and Mrs. Smith’s baked goods lines, Schwan’s reported some $3 billion in sales last year. Approximately 14,000 people work for the company nationwide.
 
By funding Raised Real’s Series A round, the startup said it would be able to expand to new distribution centers and fund marketing efforts in new territories, including Minnesota.
 
“We want to see a generation of kids raised on real food. Partnering with Schwan’s will help reach that goal much faster,” Raised Real co-founder Dr. Michelle Davenport said in prepared remarks. “Schwan’s trusted expertise and supply chain will be very instrumental as we scale our company.”
