Allianz Life Insurance Company, Mayo Clinic, and General Mills were named to the list based on employee surveys and company benefits and practices.

Allianz Life Insurance Company, Mayo Clinic, and General Mills are all among the country’s “100 best companies to work for,” according to Fortune magazine.
 
The magazine compiles its list based on employee surveys—which include questions about job satisfaction, management’s credibility, and “camaraderie”—and on a company’s pay and benefit programs, its hiring and training practices, and its diversity efforts. More than 252,000 employees at 257 companies participated in the survey.
 
Rochester-based Mayo and Golden Valley-based Allianz both made the list last year as well; Golden Valley-based General Mills has made the list 11 times in the past, although it wasn’t included last year, when the company didn’t participate in the survey.
 
Fortune partners with consulting firm Great Place to Work Institute in conducting its surveys. Only companies that are at least five years old and have more than 1,000 employees in the U.S. are surveyed for the list.
 
The top-ranking company, for the fifth time, was Google, which saw 20 percent job growth last year. Google was followed by SAS, The Boston Consulting Group, Edward Jones, and Quicken Loans, which took fifth place. Click here to see the full list.
 
Allianz was the highest-ranked Minnesota company at 47th, up from 59th last year; Mayo Clinic ranked 53rd, down from 41st last year; and General Mills was ranked 64th, down from 63rd in 2012.
 
In 2013, Allianz began two new “employee resource groups,” one of which was dedicated to serving veterans and their families and the other to supporting the LGBT community at Allianz. Allianz also offers on-campus amenities such as childcare, a fitness facility, massage therapy, and two subsidized cafés.
 
According to Fortune, the Mayo Clinic has almost 9,000 employees that have worked at the nonprofit health provider for 20 years or more—and the company has a turnover rate at an industry low of 5 percent.
 
In honoring General Mills, Fortune pointed out that the cereal maker took a stand in 2012 to oppose an amendment that would have barred same-sex marriages in Minnesota. The magazine also highlighted General Mills employee Annie Parsons, who got a marketing job at the company by submitting a song about its Larabar brand.
