3 MN Companies Rank Highly For Diversity
General Mills, Target, and Medtronic were all among the 50 “Top Companies for Diversity” on a list by DiversityInc magazine.

The rankings were determined by a 300-question survey that 1,215 different companies took—only companies with at least 1,000 U.S. workers could participate.

The magazine said its methodology for the ranking took into account factors such as a company’s talent pipeline (recruitment practices and workforce breakdown), equitable talent development (employee resource groups, mentoring, and philanthropy), CEO/leadership commitment (accountability for results, personal communication, visibility), and supplier diversity (whether it partners with companies owned by people from underrepresented groups).

This was the 10th year General Mills made the list. The Golden Valley-based company ranked 20th this year, up six spots from 2013 due to strong results in philanthropy and employee resource groups.

Minneapolis-based Target was 22nd on the list, in part for its emphasis on talent development—especially mentoring. Target also made two of DiversityInc’s other lists: It was the fourth-best company for mentoring and the eighth-best for LGBT employment.

Fridley-based Medtronic was 41st on the diversity list and has a very diverse board of directors. The 12-member board is 25 percent women, 25 percent Asian, and 8 percent Black.

Wells Fargo, which has a large presence in Minnesota, also made the list at 17th, due in part to its market outreach and innovative talent development best practices.

The top companies on the list, respectively, were Novartis Pharmaceuticals, Sodexo, Ernst & Young, Kaiser Permanente, and PricewaterhouseCoopers. DiversityInc said this year’s survey highlights that the technology sector continues to lag behind other sectors in embracing diversity. See the full list here.
