Local app developers will soon have a shot at $5,000 in cash and $20,000 in credit toward mobile development services.
A new competition, called MobDemo, will occur during the MobCon Mobile Conference, which will bring together local executives, IT professionals, and others to discuss and learn about mobile technologies and new practices. The event takes place at the Hilton Minneapolis on November 13 and 14.
The competition is limited to Minnesota-based developers, who can apply to demonstrate their mobile apps during MobDemo. When selecting finalists to showcase their apps during the conference, a committee of judges will consider design, technical functionality, user experience, and current profitability or market potential, according to Phil Wilson, a spokesperson for Mobile Twin Cities, a group that meets monthly to discuss mobile technology and one of the competition’s organizers.
MobCon Mobile Conference attendees will then vote to determine the competition’s winner.
Developers who are interested in applying can learn more here. The deadline for entries is November 1, and apps must be at least functioning prototypes—rather than merely concepts—to be considered.
MentorMate, a Minneapolis-based custom software developer, will provide the $20,000 in mobile development services to the MobDemo winner. Services could include developing the winner’s app for use on a different platform or adding new features, among other things, according to Wilson.
The prizes are funded by MentorMate and Lazard Middle Market, a Minneapolis-based investment bank.
According to the MobCon Mobile Conference’s website, at least 250 executives, industry experts, and business owners are expected to attend the two-day event. Attendees can participate in interactive sessions and workshops and hear keynote speakers, including Wade Beavers, CEO of Minneapolis-based DoApp, Inc., and Odell Tuttle, chief technology officer of Eden Prairie-based XRS Corporation (formerly Xata).
