Plymouth-based Shock Doctor, a maker of mouthguards and other sports equipment, on Wednesday announced that it has partnered with Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Percy Harvin.
Under the agreement, Harvin will have access to wear the full line of Shock Doctor products, which includes mouthgaurds, chin straps, and impact gear.
"I wanted to partner with Shock Doctor because I know they design and produce best-in-class sports protection," Harvin said in a statement. "When I'm competing, I want to be able to focus on the game and performing my best."
In addition to promoting and wearing Shock Doctor products, Harvin will serve as an advisor and provide feedback from his in-game experiences to Shock Doctor's research and development team.
"Together we will continue to develop innovative sports protection that transforms the category," Shock Doctor CEO Tony Armand said in a statement.
Harvin will join the growing "Shock Doctor team," which includes San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews, Ultimate Fighting Championship athletes Ben Rothwell and Duane "Bang" Ludwig, and motocross rider Blake Baggett.
According to Shock Doctor, its products are used by athletes in the NFL, NHL, MLB, and numerous collegiate sports. Data from athletic retail marketing analyst SportsScanINFO indicates that the company commands 90 percent of the U.S. market for athletic mouthguards.
Harvin's list of athletic awards includes a 2010 NFL Pro Bowl selection, 2009 Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Year, 2006 NCAA Division 1 football champion, Heisman Trophy candidate, and SEC Freshman of the Year.
Shock Doctor sells products in more than 8,000 retail outlets in the United States and to athletes in more than 51 countries. It has about 40 employees at its Plymouth location and works with more than 250 vendor partners.
