Target Names New Leader for Its Web Site

Casey Carl will oversee Target's digital efforts, including its new Web site, which has crashed several times since its launch.

About a month after Target Corporation announced the departure of its online president, the Minneapolis-based retailer has promoted Casey Carl to a position in which he'll oversee its Web site.

Carl was named president of multichannel and senior vice president of merchandising-a role in which he will oversee Target's digital efforts, including mobile technologies, social media, and Target.com.

Carl replaces Steve Eastman, who left Target last month. Eastman stepped down less than two months after Target, which had previously outsourced its online operations to Amazon.com, unveiled a new e-commerce Web site, which it manages in-house. The site has been plagued by glitches, including issues with gift registries and repeated crashes, including one during the launch of a limited edition Missoni fashion line.

Eastman's exit was announced the same day as one of the site's crashes-although the company has said that the departure wasn't related to performance.

Carl joined Target in 1997 and has held various positions related to merchandising. He most recently served as senior vice president of "hardlines," and he will continue to lead Target's entertainment, toys, sporting goods, and electronics businesses, in addition to his new online responsibilities.

"We are firmly committed to implementing a multichannel strategy that enables our guests to engage with Target anywhere, anytime," Kathee Tesija, Target's executive vice president of merchandising, said in a statement. "Under Casey's leadership and with the support of a strong team, we are confident that we will continue to improve our digital operations and deliver on our 'Expect More, Pay Less' brand promise."

Target serves customers at 1,767 stores and on its Web site. It is Minnesota's second-largest public company based on revenue, which totaled $67.4 billion in its most recently completed fiscal year.
