Starters-Will Advertisers Play Ball with PickPointz?- May 2011
Carlson Marketing alums Jim Ryan and Jim McCarthy and their St. Paul firm 20/20 Promotions are behind a new mobile app launched April 1 to coincide with the Twins’ season opener. PickPointz (mpickpointz.com or downloadable free from the iTunes store) is a rewards program and market research vehicle dressed up as an interactive game for sports fans. Players predict, for instance, a baseball game’s winning team and final score—then update those predictions repeatedly as the innings roll by. That’s what Ryan and McCarthy hope, at any rate, because with each update, players will get an offer from an advertiser that they can accept, reject, or rate for usefulness. The incentive to keep revising: The earliest correct guesses earn the most reward points, redeemable for electronics, gift cards, game tickets, and more. PickPointz had no advertisers at launch. Ryan and McCarthy say they’ll work on building an audience first.
