Mayo Clinic Ranks 3rd on Best Hospital Honor Roll

Johns Hopkins Hospital nabbed the top spot on U.S. News and World Report's "honor roll" for best hospitals, which includes just 17 hospitals from across the country. Several other Minnesota hospitals were recognized in individual categories.

Rochester-based Mayo Clinic is among the nation's best hospitals, according to U.S. News and World Report, which released its annual hospital rankings on Monday.

Mayo Clinic came in third on the publication's "honor roll," which is reserved for hospitals that score at or near the top in at least six of the 16 specialties that U.S. News and World Report evaluates.

Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore topped the list, followed by Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. In total, just 17 of the nearly 5,000 hospitals that were evaluated made the honor roll.

Hospitals are given honor roll points based on where they land on each specialties list-cancer; cardiology and heart surgery; diabetes and endocrinology; ear, nose, and throat; gastroenterology; geriatrics; gynecology; nephrology; neurology and neurosurgery; ophthalmology; orthopedics; psychiatry; pulmonology; rehabilitation; rheumatology; and urology.

Mayo Clinic came in first for four specialties (diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology, gynecology, and nephrology), second for four specialties (cardiology and heart surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, and pulmonology), and third for one specialty (urology).

Mayo Clinic was the only hospital listed on the honor roll from Minnesota. The following four metro-area hospitals were nationally ranked in at least one specialty:

  • University of Minnesota Medical Center-Fairview (Minneapolis)-ranked nationally in nine adult and eight pediatric specialties and was also high-performing in threeadult specialties
  • Abbott Northwestern Hospital (Minneapolis)-ranked nationally in three adult specialties and it was also high-performing in eight adult specialties
  • Mercy Hospital (Coon Rapids)-ranked nationally in one adult specialty and was also high-performing in seven adult specialties
  • Hennepin County Medical Center (Minneapolis)-ranked nationally in one adult specialty and was also high-performing in six adult specialties
