Where can you get just one bolt? As it turns out, there are still a few stores that offer bins where you can pick out as many bolts—or as few—as you’d like. In his June 2008 column, “Buckling Under Mass Quantitites,” Burt Cohen discusses how difficult it is to buy only what you need in a retail environment that routinely overwhelms consumers with bulk items or only makes products available in packages. Unfortunately for Cohen, finding a 9/32nd-inch bolt is difficult in part because many hardware experts have never heard of this unusual size.
