3M Company is among the 100 most valuable global brands, according to a recent Interbrand report.

The Maplewood-based company—whose products serve the electronics, energy, consumer, and health care industries, among others—moved up one spot from last year’s to rank 76th on this year’s list. According to Interbrand, 3M’s “brand value” totaled $5.4 billion—up 16 percent from one year ago.

To be eligible for Interbrand’s global brand list, a company must generate at least 30 percent of its revenue outside of the region in which it is based. The brand must have a presence on at least three major continents and represent broad geographic coverage in emerging markets. The brand must publicly disclose data regarding its financial performance. Additionally, it must demonstrate a return above its operation and financing costs. Interbrand factors those criteria into its financial, demand, and competitive analyses of each brand when it develops its list.

The financial analysis measured whether a brand is creating value for its owner—in other words, the brand’s after-tax operating profit. Interbrand also conducted a demand analysis, which measured consumers’ purchase behaviors regarding the brand. Additionally, the competitive analysis measured the brand’s strength and ability to create customer loyalty as it competes with other brands. Click here for the complete methodology.

Interbrand, which has nearly 40 offices in 27 countries, included Minneapolis-based Target Corporation and Richfield-based Best Buy Company, Inc., on its 2013 list of the most valuable retail brands in the United States. The two companies also ranked near the top of Interbrand’s “Best Global Retail Brands” list in 2011.

Cupertino, California-based Apple, Inc., unseated the previously top-ranked, Coca-Cola Company, which is based in Atlanta, for the first time in the history of Interbrand’s global brands report. Mountain View, California-based Google, Inc., came in second on the list, while Coca-Cola came in at third. Armonk, New York-based IBM Corporation and Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft Corporation rounded out the top five. Click here to see the full list.
